Plot Overview

Pompey and his supporters are in exile and on the lookout for the gold liberated from the treasury. Although they know the gold is now missing, they appreciate that its absence from Caesar's grasp will make it harder for him to subdue and keep Rome. Pompey's nephew (Quintus) is sent to Rome to seek out the soldiers who ambushed the gold.

Caesar declares martial law (including curfew and outlawing of assembly) and seeks the augury of (some bunch of priests?). To assure the signs are favourable, he bribes the chief auger.

Marc Antony confronts Lucius Vorenus about his "desertion" and tempts him to return to the legion by offering him membership to the eva carte(?) as a prefect of the first grade (and 10000 sisterci(?)). Lucius is keen to start his own business ("an import business, slaves mostly") and turns him down. The timely return of an obviously rich Titus saves Lucius from Pompey's nephew. Lucius orders Titus to return the gold to Caesar.

Caesar bribes some key officials within the city, but is counselled that he needs more money. He declines to "kill the rich and take their money" in order to keep his hold on the city. Titus tells Caesar and Antony that he has the gold and Caesar offers an amnesty to Pompey through Quintus, but is expecting Pompey to baulk at the terms.
