An aspect of this episode was Cleopatra needed Julius Caesar on her side in her war with her brother Ptolemy and her best way would be to bear Caesar a son, but she knew his history and lack of children with his first two wives and his current wife Calpurnia and concluded the fault must lie with Caesar himself.
To overcome this problem she at first expected Lucius Vorenus to have sex with her but his honour made him refuse. She then ordered Titus Pullo to perform and he duly obliged.
On meeting Caesar she seduced him and nine months later a son was born and Caesar was none the wiser.
