Biography

Serling was a script-writer and producer of television best-known for his work on the TV shows The Twilight Zone and Night Gallery as well as for writing the film script Planet of the Apes. He also wrote for such popular television series as Fireside Theatre and Hallmark Hall of Fame before breaking out and getting his own show. Serling is considered one of the greatest science fiction and horror writers the small screen has ever produced. At the time, he was especially well-known for being "the angry young man" of television as Serling had an interest in tackling such personally controversial subjects on television as racism, fascism, bigotry, war, crime and the problems with society and human nature in general.

Serling was known for his ironic O. Henry-like twist endings whereby the protagonist of the story was the cause of his or her own downfall. Most of Serling's stories also had a moral to them—some type of a critique of the human condition tending towards a cynicism of man's ability to coexist with himself/his environment/his society. Many of his stories also had a pivotal moment in which the protagonist might see the error of his or her ways and wind up with a happy ending, but most of the time the protagonist would choose the dishonorable path and be punished for it.
