Nelson Tarr buys a small-town radio station from Martin Walden, who's married to an old friend of Tarr's. Believing that Walden sold him a white elephant, and was also stirring up rumors that his wife and Tarr were having an affair, Tarr pays Walden a visit, which ends when Tarr slugs Walden, causing him to strike his head on a clay pot. Tarr hires Perry, under the belief that he'll be charged with manslaughter in Walden's death, but it's more serious than that...the fatal blow was struck from the front, with enough force to kill, and the charge is murder.
