Pee-Wee's Playhouse was a children's comedy that aired on CBS. The series is an outgrowth of Paul Reubens' character Pee-Wee Herman, which he created while performing with the Groundlings and eventually developed into The Pee-Wee Herman Show. After Reubens lost a Saturday Night Live audition to Gilbert Gottfried, he began developing the show further. After the Tim Burton directed Pee-Wee's Big Adventure premiered as a sleeper hit, CBS agreed to produce a live-action Saturday morning children's series based on the character.

The series employed several different recurring skits to teach children morals in an artistic environment. Some of the most popular bits include the secret word presented by Conky the Robot, short cartoons from the King of Cartoons and reading pen pal letters. The series was lauded by critics, who considered it a post-modern approach to children's television because of the absolute lack of convention in defiance of institutional sexism and racism.

Reubens and CBS mutually agreed to end the series after 45 episodes in 1990. In 1991, he was charged with indecent exposure at an adult theater and CBS immediately pulled reruns of the series. Reruns of the series aired briefly several years later on both MTV and Adult Swim.
