Plot Overview

The victim is an ex-con who was recently released from prison after serving 20 years for drug dealing. The killer is a nightclub owner, who is also an old friend of the victim and had hired him to be a doorman. The body is found in a wooded area some distance from town, and Betty deduces from the lack of blood at the scene that he was killed elsewhere and dumped out there. The cause of death is blunt force trauma to the back of the head, but the intrepid coroner can't seem to come up with a weapon, only that it left an unusual screw-like thread pattern in the fatal wound. In checking the dead man's background, they find that he had a girlfriend who worked at a bar/restaurant and that his favorite table overlooked a logistics warehouse owned by his former cellmate. The detectives visit the warehouse, which just happens to be plagued with thefts in recent days, and they meet up with their former boss, Mark Cross, who's in charge of the theft investigation. Upon hearing of the news about his former prison buddy, the warehouse owner and his goon visit the nightclub owner, whom they suspect of being in on the thefts, and force him to come up with the stolen goods, money or both. They're beating him up, but Angie and Cross arrive in time to save him. The motive for the murder involves the fact that the nightclub owner escaped prison charges for the drug dealing scheme and also has something to do with his young daughter, a promising student who he was trying to put through college. Throughout the course of the case, the three detectives deal with their respective love lives...Angie has set up a fake profile on a dating site, Paula deals with constant calls from her overbearing boyfriend, but it's Lucas's situation that lands him in hot water with Oscar. He bonded with a cute witness at the crime scene and made a date with her, which could possibly compromise her as a witness.
