Josef Kostan (a.k.a. Charles Fitzgerald) is a 400 year-old vampire living in Los Angeles. He is portrayed by Jason Dohring. Josef's personality is laid back and easy going. He's sarcastic and witty, a playboy, and Mick St. John's best friend. He's a hedge funder and CEO of Kostan Industries. He, unlike Mick, doesn't get his blood from the morgue but fresh from the vein. He's not ashamed of what he is and doesn't see the need to hide the fact that he kills people.
Although he comes off as an uncaring, sarcastic playboy, it's all just for show. Josef is actually very caring underneath the mask he wears. The scene where he shows Mick and Beth the unconcious Sarah is proof of this. He blames himself for what happened to her and feels guilty about it all the time.
Little is known about Josef's background. He stated that he was 4 in 1603 which means he was born in 1599 and is currently 409 years old. He has stated that he was once chased by an 'angry torch-bearing mob' in his past and has also stated that he did very unforgivable things when he was first turned, which he described as "going completely insane." He founded Hearst College because he lost a bet with William Randolph Hearst. He had an affair with Greta Garbo. In 1955, he fell in love with a human girl named Sarah, but when he tried to turn her into a vampire it didn't work and she was left in a coma. He has an apartment in New York where Sarah is kept and he has a nurse watching her all the time because he said he 'couldn't let her go' and holds onto the hope that one day either an advancement in medicine or a miracle will wake her up.
Episode of Sleeping Beauty. Shows Josef's kind hearted side.
Josef: "When it comes to Coraline, Mick doesn't think with his big head."
Josef: "You should put it up on your facebook page."
Mick: "You've seen my facebook page?"
Josef: "Of course I've seen your facebook page."
Mick: "... Did you like it?"
Josef: *shrug* "Yeah."
Mick: "So are we going to find your designers at the bottom of the tar pits?"
Josef: "Oh please, I don't have the energy to kill everyone who pisses me off, I have to hire some people."
Mick: "Don't do that!"
Josef: "What, use my crafty vampire abilities to sneak up on you?"
Mick: "What are you doing here?"
Josef: "Guillermo called. He said you were about to do something stupid and I said 'Wait, that can't be the Mick that I know.'"
Mick: "You should come, you love a challenge."
Josef: "No, see, i'm a lover, not a fighter, now besides, I would just get dead trying to protect you, the human liability."
Mick: "What do you remember from when you were 4?"
Josef: "Well it was 1603 Mick. It's reasonable it would be a little hazy."
Josef: "So this is how the little people live? Ahh, vinyl recliners. Have crazed killer written all over them, don't they?"
Mick: "Josef, if you are not going to help, at least try to be quiet."
Josef: "I would love to Mick... But I just don't know what we are looking for..."
Josef: [to Mick] "I know you have morals and scruples and that's fine.. sort of."
Josef: [to Mick] "Poured myself a drink. You actually drink this stuff? What is it, like non-fat soy vegan blood?"
Mick: "You don't want it?"
Josef: "Get out of here!"
Josef: "Vampire solidarity, rah, rah, rah and all that."
Mick: "Hey, and don't forget. I'm your only friend who doesn't like you just for your money."
Josef: "True. Sad, but true."
Josef: [to Mick] "Hey, you have a soft spot for the mortal ones. A fascination with all the charming things they do while listening to the tick tick tick of their own looming demise, that's fine, that's good. Everyone needs a hobby."
[While looking at a pornographic website]
Josef: "Boy a lot's changed in 400 years."
Mick: "Yeah, there's no regular cat houses anymore."
Josef: "Another casualty of the digital age. Categories. Blondes, Asians, Busty, Mature... Equestrian. Choice, choices, choice. It's very efficient. Very... American."
Mick: "You sound almost nostalgic."
Josef: "Y'know, whatever happened to the good old days of four girls on a street corner undercutting each other?"
Josef: "You have to understand, Mick and Coraline's relationship was one of those terrifying, completely self-destructive freakshows that you spend your whole life searching for, knowing it can only end in one or both of you dead."
Beth: "That's your idea of love?"
Josef: "What can I say, I'm a romantic."
[Mick is pulling bullets out of Josef after he gets shot]
Josef: "What are you using back there, barbeque tongs?"
Mick: "You know, for someone who's 400 years old you sure have a low threshold for pain."
Josef: "Well giving is different than receiving."
Mick: "Some medieval vampire showed up at my place looking for Coraline."
Josef: "What'd he look like?"
Mick: "I dunno. Tall, around 6'3, 200lbs, dark hair. He seemed to know everything about me."
Josef: *chuckles* "Sounds like someone has a crush."
Josef: *clears throat* Anything else?
Beth: "Did you know my editor was investigating your involvement with a bogus charity scam?"
Josef: "Hi Beth. Me? I'm doing fine, thanks for asking."
Mick: "She was found dead a couple hours ago."
Josef: "So what am I, a suspect? Cool. It's like role-playing except without the leather."
Josef: "Was she found in the tar pits?"
Josef: "That was the only person I killed this week."
Mick: "Look, we'll need to talk to your PR man."
Josef: "Remember the tar pits?"
Josef: "Unless you and Beth rewrite the rules of vampire love and figure out how to procreate..."
[Turns to see Beth standing behind him]
Josef: "Hi Beth. [whispers to Mick] Beth's here."
Josef: [about Sarah] "We met at Grand Central Station. She asked me for a light and the moment I looked into her eyes I knew she was something special. I knew better than to get involved with a human but, I couldn't help myself."
Beth: "You fell in love with her."
Josef: "I didn't go looking for it, believe me. But the longer I was around her the more I thought that the reason I became a vampire was so I could live long enough to meet her. It took me over 350 years to find her, and only a year to lose her."
Mick: "You know, it isn't your fault."
Josef: "Yeah, but it is. I'm the one that did this to her."
