Mobile Suit Gundam is an science fiction anime series that established the long-running Gundam franchise. In Universal Century 0079, the Earth Federation and the Principality of Zeon have been forced into a war that reaches from Earth to every colony associated with the federation. The Zeon quickly have gained the upper hand in the war due to their use of a revolutionary weapon known as "mobile suits." But when a Zeon recon unit attacks Side 7, its citizens discover mobile suits developed by the Federation called Gundam. The wounded population uses these weapons in hopes of changing the course of the war and, hopefully, end it once and for all.

Despite the fact that is spawned several spin-offs and continuations, Mobile Suit Gundam was not a popular series by any means. It was initially conceived as a 52 episode series, but sponsors for the show forced producers to cut it down to 39 episodes. A renegotiation allowed them to stave off cancellation for one month, leaving them at the odd 43 episodes. The series was revived due to merchandising by Bandai Entertainment, particularly due to the popularity of Gundam models.

The series did not appear on American television until 2001, when it was aired on Toonami on Cartoon Network. The series was not received well in the United States either, but it wasn't until the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks that it was pulled from the line-up for good. Though the series was near completion, it was pulled after September 12th due to its socially inappropriate content about violence and war. The series was later broadcast on Adult Swim on June 8, 2002 but was also pulled before completion.
