Marvel Productions was a production company owned by Marvel Comics. They focused on animated TV series, although they also produced some TV specials and movies.
The company started in 1981 when Friz Freleng retired from DePatie-Freleng Enterprises and that company was sold to Marvel Comics and renamed to Marvel Productions. In 1997, Marvel Comics filed for bankruptcy, and were bought by Toy Biz. One of the cost-cutting moves the new ownership did was to close down Marvel Productions. The back catalog was sold to Saban Entertainment, which has since been sold to The Walt Disney Company.
While the company was around, they made some of the most popular animated shows of the 80's, including Transformers, Muppet Babies and G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero. They also made some shows based on the parent company's characters, including Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, The Incredible Hulk, and Fantastic Four.
