Basic Information

While living in Iraq, Amira was once falsely accused of harboring an enemy of the state. She was arrested by the Republican Guard and questioned about her involvement. Since she was innocent, Amira couldn't tell them anything. She was held for three months, and during that time she was tortured by a man named Sayid Jarrah. Amira was scarred for life when Sayid poured boiling oil onto her hands and arms to get her to talk. Amira eventually confessed to a crime that she didn't commit and was let go.

Amira and her husband Sami, moved to France after her traumatic ordeal. Her husband opened an Arabian restaurant in Paris. Amira couldn't get over the experience and would spend her days inside, too afraid to leave the apartment. She would sit by the window and stare into an alley, where she would often see a cat looking for scraps of food. One day, Amira saw a group of children trapping the cat in a box. She watched as they lit firecrackers and threw them in the box. She could hear the cat howling from three stories above. Finally, Amira had a reason to leave her apartment as she went out and rescued the cat. She took the cat up to her apartmant and it became a very loving pet.

One day, Amira and Sami passed another Arabian restaurant where she recognized someone from her pass. It was the cheff of the restaurant. Even though she only caught a glimpse of him, she instantly recognized him - it was Sayid Jarrah, the torturer from her past.

Sami devised a plan to get hold of Sayid. He went to have lunch at the restaurant where Sayid was working and asked to speak to the cheff. Sayid went to speak with Sami, who complimented Sayid's food and offered him a job at his restaurant. He claimed that his own cheff had just recently quit his job. He asked Sayid to come over and see the restaurant before making a decision.

That night, Sayid arrived and Sami showed him the restaurant. Amira came in and was introduced to Sayid. Suddenly, Sami's men grabbed Sayid and beat him. They tied him up and locked him in a store room. Sami told Sayid that he knew who he was, that he tortured Amira for something she didn't do. Sayid confessed that he lied about his name. He revealed his true identity and confessed that he used to work for the Republican Guard, but denied having ever seen Amira before in his life. Sami was determined to keep Sayid prisoner until he confessed, otherwise he would kill him.

The next day, Sami brought Amira into the store room with him, and proceeded to beat Sayid up. Still Sayid denied all their accusations. When Sami was about to beat Sayid with a metal pipe, Amira stopped him and said it was enough for the day.

Amira wanted to speak to Sayid in private, so she went to the store room alone and sat down with her cat in her lap. Amira told Sayid about her fears of leaving her apartment after they just arrived in Paris. She told him the whole story of how she eventually went outside to rescue the cat. She explained to Sayid what a loving pet the cat was, but that every once in a while, it would bite or scratch her for no reason. Amira said that the cat does so, because it forgets that it is now safe. Amira said that she always forgives the cat, because she knows how it feels never to feel safe, and this is because of Sayid. She asked Sayid to show her the respect of acknowledging what he did to her and to at least remember who she was.

Sayid confessed to Amira that he remembered her and what he did to her. He said that her face has haunted him ever since he left Iraq. Sayid cried out of shame and apologized for what he had done. Amira cried as well, and told Sayid that she forgave him. She told him that she would go to her husband and tell him that she had made a mistake and that Sayid was the wrong man. Sayid asked why she would do that. Amira said that all people are capable of doing what those children did to that cat, but she will not be that person. Amira kept her word and Sayid was let go.
