John Munch is a detective in Manhattan's special victims unit played by Richard Belzer. Munch's career as a sex crimes detective is a continuation of his previous police career in Philadelphia when he was assigned to homicide investigation.

The character John Munch has appeared on more television series than any other character. In addition to being a regular character on Law & Order: Special Victims Unit and Homicide: Life on the Street, Much has appeared in episodes of The X-Files, The Beat, Law & Order: Trial by Jury and Arrested Development; and will soon appear on one of the final episodes of The Wire. Reportedly Belzer will soon film an appearance as Munch for the French show Paris Enquetes Criminelles.
