Land of the Lost is a sci-fi drama that aired on NBC.
Land of the Lost details the adventures of the Marshall family (father Rick, his teenage children Will and Holly) who are trapped in an alternate universe inhabited by dinosaurs, a primate-type people called Pakuni, and aggressive humanoid/lizard creatures called Sleestak. The episode storylines focus on the family's efforts to survive and find a way back to their own world, but the exploration of the exotic inhabitants of the Land of the Lost is also an ongoing part of the story.
Due to the popularity of Land of the Lost, a remake of the show was made in 1991 and aired on ABC for two seasons. In 2009, a feature film parody based loosely on the show and starring Will Ferrell was produced by original series creators Sid and Marty Krofft and released by Universal Pictures, but was unsuccessful at the box office due to a number of elements in the movie (which targeted an adult audience) deviating from, and not being completely faithful to, the 1974 series (which was made for a child audience), which drew negative reviews from critics and fans of the original show. Among the major changes made in the movie remake was the Marshalls (who were a family in the series) being turned into three unrelated characters, as well as Rick Marshall (a heroic character in the series) being turned into a pompous and egotistical idiot in Will Ferrell's portrayal of the character in the movie.
Land of the Lost was produced by Sid & Marty Krofft Television Productions. Worldvision Enterprises and successor companies Paramount Domestic Television and CBS Paramount Television previously had distribution rights to the series, but those have since passed to NBCUniversal Television Distribution due to its sister company Universal Pictures' ties to the feature film remake.
