Plot Overview
Shaun has mysteriously recovered completely from an injury that should have ended his surfing career, not to mention his life. While the family rejoices, Mitch misses the entire moment because he's already entrenched in the belief that Shaun is dead and gone. Outside the hospital, Cass offers to give him a ride to avoid the reporters. The doctors inside tell Butchie and Cissy that keeping Shaun in the hospital would only serve to better the hospital's interests and wouldn't help him at all. The remaining family members, along with Kai, John and Bill, take Shaun out of the hospital and escape while Freddy and one of his dealers distract the press.
The family attempts to recover from the trauma they've all suffered in their home after barricading themselves inside. Eventually, the number of people dwindles down to just Butchie, Cissy and Shaun, with Mitch on the way home in Cass's car. While they attempt to figure out what to do next, Kai and John are in her trailer. Kai tries to teach him about the words that he's saying (mostly just "bone") when he says "See God, Kai." Her eyes roll into the back of her head and brief, grainy images appear, presumable as a result of her sudden clairvoyance. Vietnam Joe hurts his leg, Ramon and the others spill the pea soup they bought for the Yosts, Butchie is given what looks like heroin by Shaun, in a separate scene smoke comes from Butchie's head and he clutches at the top of his skull. Kai awakens feeling like her piercings were put into a furnace and tells John not to do that (whatever it was) to her ever again.
When Mitch finally gets back to his home, he and Cissy have a fight over what happened with Shaun and he decides that they need some time apart. Shortly after he jumps the fence out back and leaves the premises, the doctor appears at the door. Cissy asks him why he's at her house, but even he doesn't seem to be entirely clear on that detail. He offers to perform one last follow-up examination, even though he knows that Shaun is perfectly fine. After the examination, the doctor tells Shaun that he's fine. He later goes outside to talk to Butchie, who complains about his implants burning. The doctor tells him that it could be as a result of intravenous drug use, but also that perhaps he is experiencing a paranormal event. Butchie tells him about his father levitating and everything weird about John, but the only answer the doctor can muster is a declaration of how happy he is.
