Plot Overview

Corporate lawyer Harriet "Harry" Korn is disgusted with her arrangement at her current firm and bemoaning her miserable life when two strange incidents happen: first, a young man attempting a suicide leap lands on her, and second, Adam, a lawyer from a rival firm (whose firm is opposing Harry's in a high-profile case) accidentally runs her down with his car while she's crossing the street. Harry decides to rent a vacant storefront to set up a new legal practice, a storefront that was previously a high-profile shoe store (and still has some of the store's stock!) and is soon visited by Malcolm, the young man who fell on her, who's in need of legal help--he's been arrested on a charge of cocaine possession and could be kicked out of college as a result. Even though she's not a criminal lawyer, Harry agrees to represent him, despite the fact that criminal trials are far from the civil trials that she's used to. Additionally, Adam, the lawyer who struck her with his car, shows up at her office, along with Damian Winslow, who runs a local protection racket. Harry refuses to pay into the protection racket deal, but instead negotiates with him...she'll avail herself of his services, and in return, she'll defend him pro bono if he ever gets into trouble...which he soon does after he shoots an armed robber who attempted to rob one of his clients, a local dry cleaner. Harry assigns Damian's case to Adam, while she squares off against an unyielding prosecutor in Malcolm's case. After successfully winning both cases, Harry decides to pursue criminal law, as well as selling fine shoes (thanks to her ditzy but fashion-conscious assistant Jenna), along with her new associate Adam and Malcolm, who's her new paralegal.
