Plot Overview

It’s 1937 and a radio episode of Guiding Light is in action. After Rev. Ruthledge and Ellis record a scene, the director cues the music and the announcer. The actors are nervously waiting for Irna. Suddenly, fiery Irna arrives and encourages everyone to believe in this show and its characters. The actors perform the same script Irna was just writing. Jack, the stiff executive, suggests Irna make the show a little more fanciful. But she insists this show is about real life and all its glorious struggles. It’s the 1940s and the announcer informs us of all the changes the show underwent during this time—including the introduction of the Bauers to the Guiding Light canvas. As Irna’s voice introduces the Bauer family, we see the actors playing them enter the studio. As the ratings soar, Irna wants to move Guiding Light to TV. The director tells the actors that they’re moving to TV—and they’ll have to do their own makeup. They begin to wonder about how great this could be if it actually works. It’s 1952 and we see the crew and cameramen taping a scene, and as they finish, the actors rush off to do the radio version. Jack calls Irna to tell her that they’ve decided to make Guiding Light exclusively a TV show. It’s a new era with a bright future. As we see various clips from original broadcasts, Rev. Ruthledge begins to speak once more. His words carry over as we see Josh in the present day, consoling Cassie, and Jonathan still clinging to Tammy.
