Plot Overview
The history of the Elric brothers is revealed in this flashback episode. Both Edward and Alphonse showed great promise as alchemists from a young age, taking after their long-missing father. When their mother dies, leaving them alone, Ed comes up with a plan - to bring her back using alchemy.
A year after her death, they perform the transmutation - and Al is taken apart by mysterious forces, forces that also take Ed's leg. The next moment Al remembers is waking up inside the suit of armor that stood in the corner of the room, finding his brother bleeding to death from a missing leg and arm. Ed gave up the arm in order to bind his brother's soul to the armor.
Al takes his brother to the Rockbell house next door, where Pinako Rockbell treats Ed's injuries, and they are found by Colonel Roy Mustang. Mustang invites them to Central (the country's capital), which Ed only considers because he has decided that he must make things right, somehow getting his brother's body back. Before the brothers leave, Ed receives an automail arm and leg from the Rockbells.
