Running Mates is the tenth episode of the second season of Family Guy, and the seventeenth episode overall.
The episode plays upon the rivalry between spouses Peter and Lois, both candidates for the Quahog School Board. Initially, Peter is fully supportive of Lois but things turn sour when he realizes Lois had gotten his favorite teacher fired due to his increasingly unstable, erratic behavior in the classroom. Meanwhile, after Chris is suspended from school for inappropriate behavior involving voyeurism, Peter – who wins the school board election – launches an effort to introduce pornographic magazines to students.

Allusions and References
- Fast Times at Ridgemont High: The character Mr. Fargus is a reference to Mr. Vargus from the movie.
- Mister Rogers' Neighborhood – A cutaway gag depicts show host Fred Rogers as a perverted peeping tom, spying on his attractive blonde neighbor undressing in her bedroom. He growls "Hello, neighbor" (his signature greeting) while drooling over what he is viewing.
- NFL Monday Night Football: The televised school board debate is shown on Monday Night Debate, which takes its title (and opening sequence style) from the long-running prime-time football program.
- Playboy and Penthouse magazines: Playpen magazine is the adult magazine targeted toward men, of which Peter is a subscriber.
- RoboCop: The robot hall monitor is inspired by the robot cop in the 1987 action movie.
- Schoolhouse Rock: Peter writes new lyrics to the song "Conjunction Junction" to perform in a sex education class at James Woods High School.
- Various classic situation comedies: Peter – completely unprepared for his debate with Lois – gives excerpts from the theme songs of several situation comedies, including Diff'rent Strokes, One Day at a Time and The Facts of Life, before concluding his "statement" with the production credit for UBU Productions Inc. ("Sit, Ubu, sit. Good dog!"), the company that produced Family Ties.
