• In the episode "Stew-Roids," Joe reveals that eldest son, Kevin, died while stationed in Iraq. Kevin had been a supporting character early in the series, but was quietly dropped when the writers were unable to develop the character. Series creator Seth MacFarlane, on the Season 5 DVD for Family Guy, explained it this way: "There is absolutely nothing interesting about Kevin. He's just a boring character." Kevin's absence was explained by his entering the service and being deployed overseas.
