Allusions and References
- Garth Brooks: Peter makes a reference to the iconic country singer's failed alter ego, "rock star" Chris Gaines.
- Coppertone advertisements: The fireman's calendar contains an image of Chris that is inspired by the suntan lotion's advertising.
- Donkey Kong: The original story involving the main character, Mario (his antagonist) and Mario's girlfriend from way back, Pauline, are spoofed in a cutaway gag. During the cutaway gag, the following two films are mentioned, as Mario suggests an alibi if he and Donkey Kong are questioned about Pauline's disappearance (itself a reference to Pauline being a part of the Donkey Kong franchise only in the initial video game release and Saturday morning cartoon, and being dropped thereafter):
- Ordinary People: The 1980 movie starring Mary Tyler Moore.
- Stripes: The 1981 war comedy film starring Bill Murray.
- Encyclopedia Brown mystery novels: The episode title is a reference to the mystery novel series.
- Taxi Driver: Joe's line, "Someday a rain'll come and wash all this scum off the streets," is taken from the 1976 movie starring Robert DiNero.
