Plot Overview

While watching the Quahog 5 News, Lois admits she has grown fond of new anchorwoman Joyce Kinney. Later, while shopping for grocery items for a church bake sale, Lois bumps into Joyce. The two quickly become close friends and spend their time together. One night, the two go out for drinks and, as the alcohol takes effect, share intimate stories. Lois eventually reveals that she had starred in a pornographic film as a teenager ("The Quest for Fur") before she met Peter. Joyce promises to keep this a secret, but she betrays this confidence by sharing this story on the next Quahog 5 News broadcast.

Lois is quickly made an outcast at her church and in the community. Outraged, Lois approaches Joyce to demand answers. Joyce justifies her expose by revealing that the two were high school classmates, and that Lois helped instigate a humiliating prank on her (placing a hot dog in her mouth and pulling down her skirt while blindfolded); Joyce's segment exposing Lois was her long-awaited retribution. When Lois seeks solace from her pastor, he tells her to leave and not return.

Depressed and knowing the gossip will spread, Lois considers her options until Brian convinces her to confront her congregation by showing the film, using Mary Magdalene's past life as a prostitute to justify her actions. Instead of increased outrage, the congregation -- by watching the film -- re-assesses their misplaced, hastily made opinions on Lois and accept the Griffins back into the congregation.

Trivia

The Show

  • In the series' continual satirical mocking of religion (particularly Christianity), the congregation sings a song noting a perceived "pointlessness" of singing the hymns. Later, Stewie expresses concern that Lois will get drunk on the communion wine and, after being overly playful with him, vomit on him. At a crucial point in the show, the presiding pastor -- having learned that Lois had starred in a pornographic movie (years earlier) -- kicks her out of the congregation, while the other parishioners whisper and mock her as the Griffins enter the church.

Behind the Scenes

  • Helen Reddy, an Australian pop singer who had several major hits in the 1970s, sings the Quahog 5 news theme.

Allusions and References

  • The Incredible Hulk - The opening of the episode is a parody of the opening credits of the 1978-1982 CBS action-drama series starring Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno. Stewie is cast in Bixby's role as Bruce Banner, the mild-mannered alter ego of The Incredible Hulk. Peter plays Ferrigno's Hulk, while Tom Tucker fills the shoes of Banner's antagonist, Mr. Tucker (originally, Banner's antagonist was Jack McGee, played by Jack Colvin).
