Plot Overview
Tom Bradford is a newspaper columnist for the Sacramento Register who happens to be the father of eight kids, which makes life hectic for him and his wife Joan. Their youngest daughter, Elizabeth, has gotten arrested for obstruction of justice after allegedly hiding a bag of drugs under the seat of her date's car (the drugs were his) and now needs legal help. The whole situation with Elizabeth leads to an argument between Tom and eldest son David, who decides that it's in the best interest of the family to move out. Nicholas, the youngest son, needs to have a tonsillectomy done. Between hiring a lawyer for Elizabeth, paying the insurance premium on Nicholas's procedure and paying the architect that Joan hired to work on their bedroom, Tom finds himself strapped.
