The network, which is distributed to 100.8 million U.S. homes, can be seen in 224 countries and territories, offering a signature mix of compelling, high-end production values and vivid cinematography across genres including, science and technology, exploration, adventure, history and in-depth, behind-the-scenes glimpses at the people, places and organizations that shape and share our world.

History

The Discovery Channel launched on June 17, 1985, with 156,000 subscribers in the United States. In April of 1989, the channel expanded to the United Kingdom; in September of that same year, the channel aired the first of many original programs, Ivory Wars. Other notable expansions included Asia/Latin America in 1994 and France, the last holdout in Europe, in 2004. In June of 2005, the Discovery Channel celebrated its 20th anniversary.
