Discovery Channel is a US-based cable network that primarily airs documentary programming. According to its parent company, Discovery Communications, the Discovery Channel reaches 475 million homes in more than 160 countries.

The Discovery Channel launched on June 17, 1985, with 156,000 subscribers in the United States. In April of 1989, the channel expanded to the United Kingdom; in September of that same year, the channel aired the first of many original programs, Ivory Wars. Other notable expansions included Asia/Latin America in 1994 and France, the last holdout in Europe, in 2004. In June of 2005, the Discovery Channel celebrated its 20th anniversary.
