Plot Overview

Several people are shot at a park in a continuing pattern of a Long Distance Serial Killer (LDSK). Because of LDSK's tendency to be from military or law enforcement. The shots also occur primarily during time periods that police change shifts and between jurisdictions, suggesting police background. Not wanting to panic the public, they discretely tell only the police the theory. This is leaked to the public. Performing a crime scene mock up using the idea that the killer is firing from the trunk of his car, the team determine the leak came from a police officer participting in the mock up. Arresting him for leaking the information, he is shot by the killer while being taken into custody.

Based on the idea the killer's contact with the victim was after the shooting, the refocus on the hospitals. After clearing a very narcissistic surgeon who fit the profile, Hotchner and Reed go to the ER to see if anyone else matches. The killer, a shift nurse named Phillip Dowd, is spooked by their presence and forces a standoff with an M4 rifle. He disarms Hotchner, who talks to stall for time. Under the ruse that he wants to beat Reed, Hotchner passes Reed his ankle holster pistol and Reed kills the LDSK.

Notes

  • Profile: His signature is that he 'underkills' by leaving his victims alive. He's 30-40 year old male veteran, narcissistic, paranoid sociopath, feels undervalued, incapable of admitting fault, works out obsessively, doesn't take responsibility, and one was or is in law enforcement.
  • Victims: Ten are shot from range by an M4 rifle, although only two of them die. One is an intentional shot to the head and the other is a death due to slow emergecy services arrival.
