Plot Overview

Dedicated Assistant D.A. Annabeth Chase is assigned the case of a mother who burned her house down with her two children trapped inside. Upon speaking to the woman and her kids, she discovers that the husband, an employee of a security firm, had installed double-entry locks and a state of the art security system, to keep the family trapped inside the house. Annabeth drops the arson and attempted murder charges against the mother and brings new charges of domestic violence against the father, despite protests from her bosses and also despite the fact that she has no witnesses who will back up the woman's claims. On top of all this, Annabeth is just returning from maternity leave and is having trouble balancing her home and work lives, and she also has to deal with the resentment she feels toward her colleague Maureen, who was promoted to the lead Assistant D.A. position while she was on leave.
