The story mentions the US Mint at New Orleans, Lousiana. This was the only branch mint operating in 1888. It opened in 1838, closed with the other branches in 1861 (opening of the Civil War) and was the only one to reopen in 1879. A second branch opened in Carson City, Nevada in 1870, but was closed between 1885-1889, finally closing in 1893.
