Set in a Georgia town called Delano (loosely modeled after Manchester, Georgia), Chiefs is based on the 1981 novel by Stuart Woods. The novel was originally inspired by fact in the form of a police chief's badge the author found in his grandmother's home. The piece of brass was stained with blood and pockmarked by buckshot. It had belonged to his grandfather, who died wearing it 10 years before Mr. Woods was born.
