Cardcaptor Sakura is a shōjo (girl's) anime program based on a popular manga published in the magazine Nakayoshi "Kodansha" from June 1996 to August 2000. The animated series spawned two theatrical films and an English adaptation known as Cardcaptors.

The show revolves around the activities of Sakura Kinomoto, a 10-year-old Japanese girl living in Tomoeda, a suburb of Tokyo. One day she ventures into her basement to investigate a noise and finds a mysterious book full of cards. The cards fly away, and the guardian of the book (who was asleep) informs her that the cards are actually elemental forces who will wreck havoc on the world unless she goes out and recaptures them.

The series follows Sakura's efforts to recapture all of the cards, while still dealing with her schoolwork and her crush on an older boy. Being in the shoujo genre, the episodes place equal emphasis on her personal problems as they do her magical adventures with the cards.

Cardcaptor Sakura was dubbed into English in 2000 by Nelvana and broadcast on Kid's WB!; however, this version was frought with controversy. The 70 episode series was cut down to 39 episodes, and scenes were recut to emphasize the action while playing down the romantic subplots. Japanese cultural elements were eliminated or disguised, and the supporting character of Syaoran Li was presented as a main character alongside Sakura. These changes made the Cardcaptors adaptation extremely unpopular with anime fans, as well as presenting the premiere example of how badly an anime series could be treated by American companies. However, Nelvana did dub all 70 episodes of the series, but the remaining 31 episodes only aired in other English speaking countries.
