Plot Overview
Melanie Mitchell and Paula Woods, the two trainee officers who worked under Jon and Ponch, wind up leaving the CHP to join the Ocean City Police Department as detectives. At first, they're handed a stack of files with menial cases like arson and purse-snatching, when all of a sudden, a man walks in wanting to report a murder, and falls over dead from two gunshot wounds--a man Melanie knows all too well, as she was almost his prom date in high school. After convincing the Lieutenant to let them have the case, they go to work, with one crucial piece of evidence being a very expensive diamond ring found taped to the man's chest. After discovering that he worked as a high-priced gigolo, the two detectives hobnob with some of the richest folks in town, hoping to find his killer, all the while confounding their boss with some of their actions, including punching out a rich bitch, causing a multi-car accident and handcuffing an obnoxious gigolo to a post.

Trivia
The Show
This was an unsold pilot for a possible spin-off series. As such, Jon and Ponch only appear briefly in the beginning, middle and end of the episode.
In the previous episode with the Mitchell and Woods characters, Trisha Townsend played Mitchell. Cindy Morgan, who took over the role for this episode, also appeared in that episode, Ponch's Angels, but as Ponch's girlfriend of the moment, Jennifer. Also, Woods was played by Barbara Stock in the previous episode, while Jayne Kennedy took over the role for this episode.
This is the only episode of CHiPs not to feature Robert Pine. None of the other regular CHP officers appear either.
Behind the Scenes
Allusions and References
The two detectives go to a market to meet one of Ponch's informants, who may be able to help them, and they walk past slabs of meat on hooks. Woods comments, "I can't believe Rocky punched these", before going to meet the flamboyant informant, who is played by the actor who played Rocky's trainer, Tony Burton!
