Plot Overview
Now that Jon has left the CHP, Ponch is content on being the 'Lone Ranger'...until Getraer notifies him that he's now in charge of a new trainee, Bobby Nelson, who introduces himself while both are riding on the freeway. Ponch immediately nicknames his new partner 'Hot Dog', due to his propensity for stunts on the job, such as doing a wheelie. A multi-car accident results in two cases for the officers, the pursuit of a pair of health club bandits (who make it personal for Ponch when they hold up his health club while he's in a yoga session and stealing his watch) and also trying to find a teenage mother who kidnapped the baby she sold to a middle-aged couple.

Trivia
The Show
First appearance for Tom Reilly as Ponch's new partner, Bobby 'Hot Dog' Nelson, and also the first appearances for Tina Gayle (as Officer Kathy Linahan) and Clarence Gilyard, Jr. (as Officer Benjamin Webster).
The opening to the show has a new look--first off, the opening scene has been scuttled in favor of preview scenes from the week's episode. Secondly, the opening credits have been retooled as well. After we see the opening shot of Erik Estrada riding his bike, we see a montage of Ponch doing assorted manly things like hang-gliding, disco dancing and water-skiing. Reilly is second-billed, and he also gets shots of macho things like beach volleyball. Robert Pine finally gets some love in the opening credits, with two shots of him in uniform. Lastly, series' mainstays Paul Linke and Lou Wagner have also been added to the opening titles as well.
Andrea Evans is billed here as Andrea Evans Massey.
Sadly, the last appearance for Dominique Dunne...the rising young actress died not long afterward, strangled to death by her boyfriend. She was only 19 years old.
