Plot Overview

A corporate raider on trial for embezzlement is found shot to death inside an elevator at a luxury hotel. Initial evidence leads Burke and his men to arrest Harold Harold, the dead man's accountant, for the murder. Certain that he was framed, Amos has Les and Tim pose as waiters at the posh hotel, much to the chagrin of the high-strung hotel manager. Since all the witnesses who were to testify at the trial are in the hotel, Amos goes about visiting each of them: the dead man's ex-wife, who had her company stolen out from under her; his biggest competitor; his lawyer; and his sexy assistant.

Notes

Another very entertaining episode, where each of the main guest stars gets to shine: Burgess Meredith's meek accountant and the weird machinery he brings with him ('What does it do?', Tim asked, to which Meredith replies, 'Do? It does nothing, that's the beauty of it!'); Broderick Crawford poking fun at his tough-guy image once again, this time taking tango lessons when Burke pays him a visit; Rhonda Fleming mistaking Captain Burke for a bell captain and ordering dinner from him, and seducing him, only to cool off considerably once she finds out he's a cop; Mamie Van Doren's character only digs musicians, so Burke turns crooner to get her attention, belting out "I Can't Give You Anything But Love", and then afterward orders a drink from waiter Tim, who immediately forgets that she ordered a Bloody Mary and brings her something else--she knows both of them are cops and tells them off big-time; Dan Duryea as an elusive lawyer who goes by cab to the same address every night, where he runs a bakery!; and finally, Hans Conried all through the episode, as a put-upon hotel manager who has trouble dealing with 'unsophisticated' cops posing as waiters.
