- The Money Pit: The episode's background story is a fictionalized version of the Money Pit on Oak Island, an islet off the coast of Nova Scotia, which has been the site of numerous excavations for a purported treasure since the mid-19th century.

- Piltdown Man: A famous scientific hoax, Piltdown Man was the name given to fossil fragments "discovered" in the early 1900s and claimed to be the remains of a form of early man. In 1953 it was exposed as a forgery fashioned from a medieval human skull, an orangutan jaw, and chimpanzee teeth.
- Goodman: It's a hoax, Dr. Brennan, like Piltdown Man.
