Plot Overview

Once again, Ichigo finds himself bleeding on the ground after being stabbed by Zaraki. However, this time, Zaraki is just as badly hurt as Ichigo is. He has just enough energy to declare Ichigo the winner of the fight, see his zanpakuto snap in half and collapse. Yachiru thanks Ichigo for putting up such a good fight and giving Zaraki a good time for the first time in a long time. She asks him to stay alive so that they can do it again sometime and bounds away with Zaraki over her shoulders.

Meanwhile, Ganju and Hanataro are still trying to make their way into the tower. Now that the fighting has stopped, Ganju gets the idea to use a grappling hook to get to the top. But, the hook breaks and he's forced to retie it (and Hanataro) to the rope. He hurls them both in no particular direction. As they're making progress, Ichigo's body is found by Yoruichi, who promises that he'll be well soon.

Somewhere in the distance, Zaraki wakes up and flashes back to when he and Yachiru were given names. He realizes that perhaps Ichigo's tactic of fighting alongside his sword might not be such a cowardly idea after all. Zaraki tries to ask his sword its name, but it doesn't reply. Zaraki melts down when his desire to become stronger overwhelms him. Yachiru puts her faith in him, but he passes out from the blood loss during her story of how he saved her life.

Ganju and Hanataro finally make it to the cell of repentance and make it inside using a spare key that he borrowed from a stock room. Hanataro tells Ganju that he's felt useless being unable to fight and that even if it means breaking the rules sometimes, he needs to do everything he can to help. Ganju assumes that all of this is being done because Rukia is attractive, but when he lays eyes on her he freezes in place. Rukia is the soul reaper who he blames for his brother's death. She admits to killing him there in the cell. He threatens to kill her, but before he can do such a thing, an intense spiritual pressure falls upon them originating from Byakuya. Ganju considers giving up since Byakuya far outclasses them and that Rukia, in his opinion, isn't worth saving. Hanataro decides to hold him as long as he can and asks that Ganju take Rukia with him when he escapes. Ganju has second thoughts and stops Hanataro from sacrificing himself by tossing him back into the cell.

Meanwhile, Captain Ukitake is awakened by his co-lieutenants, who have put off telling him about Captain Aizen's fate because of his illness. He gets up and realizes that something isn't right about what's been happening.
