Basic Information

One of Easy Company's original troops, Richard Winters began his service with Easy Company as Company Executive Officer under Lieutenant Herbert Sobel. Sobel was hated by his troops, and was replaced as commanding officer of Easy Company by Lieutenant Thomas Meehan shortly before D-Day.

Meehan was killed when his plane was struck by Nazi antiaircraft fire over France, leaving XO Winters in charge of Easy Company during the Normandy campaign. Winters and the rest of his men landed far off course near the village of Ste. Mere-Eglise, Winters having lost his weapon when his parachute opened. Lt. Winters collected as many men as he could and then headed out towards the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment's real objective at the town of Ste. Marie-du-Mont.

During the Normandy invasion, Easy Company was tasked with destroying a battery of German artillery that were firing on Utah Beach. The assault went off perfectly, and is still studied to this day at military academies as an example of advanced small-unit tactics.

Winters was promoted to Captain and moved to the position of executive officer of the entire 506th PIR after Easy Company blunted a rear attack by the Germans, routing a force of SS troops. This removed him from direct command over Easy Company, which was given to Lieutenant "Moose" Heyliger in time for Operation Pegasus, where Easy Company helped a British commando force escape from German lines across a river back to friendly territory using boats.

Captain Winters was promoted yet again to Major after the Battle of the Bulge, where the 101st Airborne (the 506th's parent unit) was surrounded by Germans and held the line at Foy during the battle despite freezing conditions and a lack of proper gear and ammunition.

Winters continued serving with the 506th until the end of the Second World War.
