Bailey's Comets is an animated comedy that aired on CBS.
Borrowing the premise of Hanna-Barbera's 1968 series Wacky Races, Bailey's Comets pits a team of roller derby skaters of the same name, led by Barnaby Bailey, as they compete against other derby teams racing cross-country in search of clues to a treasure. The end of each episode (2 per show) reveals the clue the skaters must uncover to their next destination.
The other derby teams are the Black Hats, the Broomer Girls, The Yo-Ho-Hos (a team of pirates), the Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hydes, The Texas Flycats, the Roller Coasters, the Stone Rollers, The Duster Busters, the Gargantuan Giants, the Gusta Pastas, The Hairy Madden Red Eyes, the Mystery Mob (a cloud of dust with a team of legs with skates), the Ramblin' Rivets, the Rock 'N' Rollers and the Roller Bears. There were so many characters it nearly bankrupted DePatie-Freleng as they had staffers from studios like Hanna-Barbera and Filmation moonlighting on the show to paint the animation on the cels.
The show aired at 8:30 AM Eastern to January 19, 1974 and then was moved to 9 AM Sundays as CBS did a virtual overhaul of its Saturday morning line-up on January 26, 1974.
