Overview
Dave Seville is still the harried manager, composer and surrogate father to Alvin, Theodore and Simon, only now they have counterparts--The Chipettes. Brittany, Jeanette and Eleanor are three singing girl chipmunks under the management and care of elderly Miss Miller (introduced in season 4). Brittany is the vainglorious diva, Jeanette is shy and rather smart, and Eleanor is the chubby Chipette.
Alvin and the Chipmunks was produced by Bagdasarian Productions, produced in association with Ruby-Spears Enterprises for the first five seasons. The pilot (co-produced with Chuck Jones Productions) aired in 1981, and the first season began airing on NBC's Saturday morning schedule two years later. After five seasons, Ruby-Spears left the co-operation. Bagdasarian then produced another 11 episodes together with animation studio Murakami-Wolf-Swenson, which, alongside the five first seasons, and two primetime specials originally aired in 1984 and 1985, went into syndication as a package of 65 episodes.
Simultaneously the show continued on NBC; new episodes of the show, now renamed The Chipmunks was made by Bagdasarian in association with DiC_Entertainment. Two seasons later, it became The Chipmunks Go to the Movies.
In the mid-1990s, Bagdasarian, this time in association with animation studio A-1 Production, returned with another three specials, and in 1999 and 2000, two DVD movies, produced by Bagdasarian and Universal Cartoon Studios, were released.
Warner Bros. Television now owns and distributes the series due to parent WarnerMedia's ownership of the Ruby-Spears catalogue.
