Plot Overview

Mike inherits $500 from an uncle he barely remembers. After taxes, he has $275 left.

Archie feels that Mike should give him the money, but Mike wants to buy Gloria a new coat and give the rest to the McGovern campaign on the eve of the Nixon/McGovern Presidental election. Archie is pro-Nixon and resents Mike donating the money to something he's very much against.

After a huge fight between Archie and Mike, Mike and Gloria end up buying their own food separately from Archie and Edith's, and eat in the kitchen. Gloria has to rush in from work to cook dinner for the two of them; she and Edith are in each others way and tempers flare in the kitchen.

Mike is tired of Gloria's menu of hamburger, then meatloaf every other night and they get into an argument. Gloria is very stressed, caught in the crossfire between her husband and her father.

Mike has taken an after-school job at a gas station secretly so he can earn the money to give Archie in the hope that Archie will stop making comments about how much Mike owes him.

After Mike gives Archie the money the situation calms down, but politics is a subject that is always going to drive a wedge between them.

Notes

This episode shows Gloria beginning to take on more of Archie's mannerisms and facial expressions.
