Plot Overview
Malloy and Reed spot and call in a fire at a warehouse and assist with crowd control while firefighters battle the blaze. A young man, Lauro Perez, is later hailed as a hero after risking his life to rescue a watchman trapped in the burning warehouse and is brought to the hospital afterward for treatment of smoke inhalation and minor burns, but when the officers tell him that he may receive a citation for bravery for the rescue, and he is then surprised by his family and friends with a party honoring him for the rescue after he is brought home, Lauro is unwilling to accept the honor. Malloy and Reed soon learn the reason for Lauro's reluctance when his girlfriend Rita takes his father and the officers to a church across the street from the Perez house, where they find Lauro praying near the altar. Lauro confesses to Reed and Malloy that he needed money to get an engagement ring for Rita, so he broke into the warehouse to look for items to steal and was using a match to see his way around when he heard something (evidently the watchman), then panicked and fled after dropping the still-lit match, resulting in the fire.
