From The TV IV
ALF is a sitcom that aired on NBC. The Alien Life Form of the title (portrayed by a puppet) crash landed in the garage of the Tanner home after escaping the destruction of his home planet, Melmac. Despite his selfish and arrogant nature, ALF befriends the Tanners and they agree to hide him from the government, who he is afraid would experiment on him.
The humour is derived largely from ALF's misunderstanding of human culture, the Tanners' attempts to hide him from their neighbours, and the occasional weirdness that ALF brings to the household, including a giant mutated cockroach and attention from federal authorities. A constant joke is that ALF wants to eat the Tanner's cat, Lucky - cats are a delicacy on his home planet.
The series spawned a telefilm, two animated series: ALF: The Animated Series and ALF Tales, and one talk show: ALF's Hit Talk Show.
ALF is produced by Alien Productions. Debmar-Mercury, the distribution division of Lionsgate Television, owns the North American distribution rights to the series, while Warner Bros. Television, the former North American distributor, still syndicates the show internationally.
