Behind the Scenes
- Although "Please Don't Hit Me, Mom" was originally produced as an ABC Afterschool Special, the film made its debut in prime-time as an "ABC Theater for Young Americans" presentation on September 20, 1981 and aired as an ABC Afterschool Special on January 19, 1983.
- After the film's initial release, social workers that specialize in child abuse have cited "Please Don't Hit Me, Mom" as a learning tool where cases of child abuse are successfully prosecuted in a court of law once a successful case is established.
- When Sean Astin and Patty Duke were filming a scene in which Sean's character was being abused by his mother, Sean found it hard to cry and would wind up laughing hysterically because it reminded him of the situations that their family had been in. Patty took Sean aside and told him, "Look, I took a chance on you. What do you think you're doing? This is my career, this is my life... these people are counting on me. They're counting on you." After that, Sean promptly burst into tears and Patty signaled for the cameras to keep rolling so they could finish filming the scene.
