The Weather Channel, as the name implies, focuses on delivering weather forecasts throughout the day. Over cable, forecasts are programmed for individual localized areas. On satellite, the forecasts are national with an option on DirecTV's remotes to obtain a five-day forecast for subscribers' immediate area. Originally, the forecasts were the only content on The Weather Channel, but the channel started producing weather-related programming such as Storm Stories and When Weather Changed History.

In January 2014, DirecTV dropped The Weather Channel from its roster over carriage fees and the station's penchant for airing some "reality" shows. The channel spot, 362, was replaced by WeatherNation. It returned two months later, and WeatherNation was moved to channel 361.
