From The TV IV

Season Twelve of Survivor premiered on February 2, 2006. It is the third edition of Survivor to take place in Panama. This season is the second season, after Pearl Islands, to undergo a radical change to the usual format of the game. This season promises sixteen new castaways situated in four tribes, each separated into young versus old as well as men versus women. There are severe consequences to losing in this season, as contestants will be banished into an island where they will be exiled for an undefine number of days.

This season is partially modeled from the Survivor: Palau concept of Exile Island, where Janu was banished to and eventually felt rejuvenated after being left alone from the rest of her tribemates. Likewise, this season's exile island can have a positive impact on both the players and the game.
