Superjail (2007—) is an animated comedy series broadcast on Adult Swim, created by cartoonists Christy Karacas, Stephen Warbrick and Ben Gruber. The three previously worked on animated shorts for the web like Barfight and Space War, as well as animated TV on Beavis and Butt-Head and Cartoon Sushi.
The series takes place in the most violent, sprawling prison complex in the universe, lorded over by the mysterious Warden who inherited the jail from his father. The Warden has been described as like a "sadistic Willy Wonka" and has transformed the jail into a psychedelic landscape not unlike the Chocolate Factory, except with more violence and riots.
Superjail was one of the two original series immediately picked up by Adult Swim during its 2007 upfronts announcement. The first season will begin airing September 28, 2008. The pilot premiered on May 13, 2007 alongside a slew of other pilots, including Fat Guy Stuck in Internet, the other show initially picked up for a full season. A second episode was later shown on April 1, 2008 as part of an April Fools promotion.
