History
Sundance is a specialty cable network that specializes in featuring critically acclaimed movies and independent films, as well as experimental projects from cutting-edge visionaries. The network was formed in 1996 as an offshoot of Robert Redford's Sundance Institute, with Viacom's Showtime Networks and NBC Universal serving as partial owners. In 2008 Cablevision bought full ownership of the network, making it a part of it's Rainbow Media family of TV assets. In 2011 Rainbow Media was spun off by its parent company and renamed AMC Networks.
Mainly airing feature films, Sundance Channel has also a history of producing a limited amount of documentary programming, and has broadcast several acclaimed imported scripted television series, including Australia's Kath & Kim, Brazil's City of Men, UK's Shameless, and others.
In 2004, Sundance aired its first scripted original miniseries, the four part event Tanner on Tanner directed by Robert Altman. A couple of years later the channel then slowly began increasing its original programming, resulting in the three-part Carlos in 2010, and the two-part Appropriate Adult in 2011.
In 2013, the channel will premiere it first full length dramatic series; Jane Campion's Top of the Lake and Ray McKinnon's Rectify.
