The Sundance Channel is a specialty cable network that specializes in featuring critically acclaimed movies and independent films, as well as experimental projects from cutting-edge visionaries. The network was formed in 1996 as an offshoot of Robert Redford's Sundance Institute, with Viacom's Showtime Networks and NBC Universal serving as partial owners. In 2008 Cablevision bought full ownership of the network.
