Season Five of Pokémon premiered on August 9, 2001. It completes the adaptation of the Nintendo Game Boy games Pokémon Gold and Silver, following the storyline through the championship level. In Japan, this is considered the last season of the regular Pokémon series; all subsequent seasons are considered to be a different show called Pokémon Advanced Generation. The same is not true of the English-language release, as the production numbering continues unabated.

Season 5 follows Ash as he finishes collecting all of the Johto League badges, going on to compete in the Johto Silver Conference. The season also features a story arc in which both Ash and Misty compete in the Whirl Cup competition against each other. The end of the season marks the departure of Misty as a regular character, as well as many of Ash's Pokémon. In the USA, the season was given the unique name Pokémon: Master Quest.
