Biography

Matthew Fox was born on July 14, 1966 in Crowheart, Wyoming. The middle of three brothers, Fox grew up on his family's ranch and helped raise long-horn cattle, horses, and grow barley. He attended Deerfield Academy in Massachusetts for a post-grad year before attending Columbia University on a football scholarship. Between playing football and studying, Fox graduated in 1988 with a degree in economics and the intent to work on Wall Street. He applied for a job to sell stocks at Prudential-Bache, but turned the offer down when he saw the atmosphere and realized it wasn't for him. His girlfriend's mother, a modeling agent, suggested he try modeling and Fox landed a few commercials before studying for two years at The School for Film and Television in New York City, New York. Upon graduating, he began acting with the Atlantic Theater Company. Fox married Marghertia Ronchi in 1992. They have two children, a daughter named Kyle (pronounced "Kyleigh") born in 1998 and a son named Byron who was born in 2001. Fox and his family currently live in Hawaii.

Fox landed his first television role on an episode of Wings in 1992, but made his debut as a featured actor in Freshman Dorm, a CBS drama about six students entering college in Southern California. Fox's big break was when he landed the role of Charlie Salinger on Party of Five. The show ended in 2000 and Fox moved on to the horror drama Haunted on UPN, but the series was short-lived. Fox eventually landed the role of Jack Shephard on ABC's Lost in 2004.
