Avatar Roku was the previous Avatar before Aang, who came from the Fire Nation. Since the Avatar is the reincarnation of the same soul over thousands of years, Roku and all of the previous Avatars are all a part of Aang. He first sent his dragon spirit animal (much like what Appa is to Aang) out to find Aang when he first entered the Spirit World in Book 1, Chapter 7 (The Winter Solstice, Part 1: The Spirit World) and direct him to the Fire Temple to meet. After this meeting, Roku has appeared various times to help Aang in times of need, such as Chapter 1 of Book 2 (The Avatar State) and to explain what Aang must do in order to restablish balance between the elements.

• Roku first appeared in Chapter 8 of Book 1 (The Winter Solstice, Part 2: Avatar Roku) to warn Aang that he must defeat the Fire Lord Ozai before the end of summer and the return of Sozen's Comet.
• Appeared in Chapter 16 of Book 1 (The Deserter) and commanded Jeong Jeong to teach Aang Firebending.
• Appeared in Chapter 20 of Book 1 (The Siege of the North Part 2) and told Aang to search out the spirit Koh in the Spirit World.
• Appeared in Chapter 1 of Book 2 (The Avatar State) to explain the Avatar State to Aang.
