VHS (Vertical Helical Scan or Video Home System) is a recording and playback format for video cassette recorders. Invented in 1976 by JVC, it became the standard for video cassette tapes due to longer recording time, cheaper media, and supposedly better marketing than its nearest competitor, Betamax.

VHS has been supplanted in recent years by the advent of DVD technology.
