Justice League is the DC animated universe continuation of the Batman/Superman animated series that aired on The WB in 2000. The series takes Batman and Superman and combines them with relative newcomers to the DC animated universe (Martian Manhunter, Green Lantern, Wonder Woman, Flash and Hawkgirl) to battle villains ranging from Lex Luthor to The Joker to Solomon Grundy and everyone in between.

The series was first considered in 1998 when Paul Dini and Bruce Timm were discussing a Justice League cartoon while producing Superman: The Animated Series. They initially considered making Justice League Superman-centric, but with two added characters. However, DC Comics president and editor-in-chief Jenette Kahn had them nix the entire idea because she wanted more focus on Superman in his cartoon. She felt that adding extra characters to every episode would diminish Superman.

Throughout the years, legal problems (due to the Justice League live-action pilot produced) and creative differences (Bruce Timm never liked the idea of a group show) plagued the production of the series. Timm's objections ranged from inability to get into the head of one character, to constant design of new locations and most of all the amount of characters in one scene would be difficult to stage. He changed his mind after a Batman Beyond episode which featured the future version of the Justice League and ended up being the one to give Cartoon Network the call. The series debuted with a three-part arc that aired on Cartoon Network as a feature length movie during prime time.

The first series ended in 2004 (after numerous delays) with a three-part story, much like the first episode(s), that was also aired as a prime-time movie. Later that year, the series name was changed to Justice League Unlimited and added a massive supply of reserve members to the league.
