Basic Information

Captain Herbert Sobel, originally Lieutenant Sobel, led E Company, 506th PIR from their time training at Camp Toccoa until shortly before Normandy, when a sort of mutiny by his noncommissioned officers caused Colonel Sink to have him reassigned back stateside. He returned after the Normandy campaign, although not to Easy Company - Captain Sobel was assigned to supply duties.

Easy Company's distrust of Sobel stemmed from events during their training, where Sobel drilled them harder than any other unit in the 506th. Even more serious, however, was Sobel's lack of a sense of direction, which got Easy Company into trouble on more than one occasion when he misread maps and led them in the wrong direction, and his lack of sense in combat, which manifested itself at least once during their training as he ordered them to charge out of their trenches into an ambush by an opposing company during an exercise.

Essentially born to be a rear-echelon officer, Sobel was probably lucky to have received a transfer as far away from front-line combat duty as possible. Easy Company certainly thought they were lucky to be rid of him.
