The annual Christmas Party is the focus of the whole Office as Michael brings in a too-tall Christmas tree that has to be cut down to size. As per usual, they have a Secret Santa gift giving with a $20 limit. Jim is fortunate to have Pam as his Secret Santa match, so he prepares a teapot with several mementos as well as a card telling Pam how he feels.

Michael is anticipating giving Ryan a $400 Video iPod, made possible by his $3000 bonus check for saving the company money by firing an employee, but when his gift from Phyllis is a hand knitted oven mitt he changes the rules and institutes 'Yankee Swap'. This allows people to steal other peoples gifts and makes Phyllis incredibly despondent and Jim desperate as his personal feelings are inside the teapot. The Secret Santa gift giving ends as Michael accidentally makes his bonus check known and Dwight ends up in possession of the teapot.

Michael makes an emergency run to the liquor store and returns with a case of vodka and allows the office to have a very drunk Christmas party. Highlights include Todd Packer showing up and passing out, Kelly impuslively kissing Dwight, Angela breaking down from the results of the Christmas party and seeing Dwight kiss Kelly, and Meredith making the most of her last day before giving up drinking and flashing Michael. Pam, noticing how much Jim wants her to have it and hearing that Roy had planned to buy her an iPod anyway, switches the Video iPod for the teapot although Jim removes the card before she can read it.
